Found this specimen today growing in some wood chips next to the house. To me it has to be the ugliest mushroom I have ever seen! But I suppose it has its niche in the local ecology.......

I have them around my yard, and they are elsewhere on our island (SQEQOTE piers). In my mind i call them black wizards, or witch's mushrooms. Thanks for identifying them as it's good to know the real name, but I'll likely still call them black wizards.
